The Oscars 2013 Jewellery

By now you have seen the dresses, seen the speeches and seen Jennifer Lawrence’s fall on her way to accept her award.. (Awkies – but so well handled!). Now is the time to have a look at the jewellery and wow – there were some amazing pieces! Not surprisingly, diamonds seemed to be the rock of choice and cuffs were big this year. Small drop earrings or studs with big necklaces or statement earrings seemed to be the next bet but cuffs definitely ruled this Oscars.

Jennifer Aniston work diamond bracelets and a ring that I would die for!

Reese Witherspoon also whipped out the diamond cuff..

Jennifer Garner was bang on trend.

Amy Adams' diamond cuff was by Moa.

US-OSCARS-ARRIVALS

Renee Zellwegger piled the cuffs on in a gorgeous maroon.

And then the rings. Now you all know I have a soft spot for rings, but these were amazing.

Jennifer Hudson wore a ring with a circular design, very original. Called a Halo Ring, it was by Sutra. I’ll take two thanks,

21st Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation's Oscar Viewing Party - Arrivals

Ok now normally I am not a matchy matchy type. But the ring just works with these amazing earrings. It is from the Murder She Wrote collection by Stephen Webster (how cool is that collections name?)

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

And Zoe Saldana? She wins the ring off hands down! I LOVE the fact that she is wearing more than one ring on one hand and that ring sitting above her knuckle proves that she is a rockstar. A jewellery rockstar. Top marks.

And the snake ring is also a trend at the mo (see my post about it here).

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Now I must be honest, I have no idea who Samantha Barks is but this necklace was too lovely to leave out. Attention grabbing to the max.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Ditto the above with this chicky boo who arrived with Steven Spielberg. Kate Capshaw stole the show with her diamond collar, I even spotted it when the camera zoomed out during the show. Nice.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

If you look carefully at Amanda Seyfried’s ears, you’ll see that these are actually cute little ear cuffs.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

I know Jane Fonda looks deep in thought, don’t let that fool you – it’s all the botox. She rocked (excuse the pun) 8ct yellow diamond chandelier earrings set in 18ct yellow gold by Chopard.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Catherine Zeta Jones took my breath away. Not because she barely looks her age, but because of those earrings by Lorraine Schwartz. I want.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Jessica Chastain always brings an elemant of old Hollywood glamour in my opinion and her earrings did her justice.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Nicole Kidman wore black and gold earrings from Fred Leighton. Not too sure about these, I must be honest.

And that’s that folks! There were many other baubles on display but I chose my favourite to show you. Think I missed any out? Let me know!

Cute but impractical pieces..

So this morning I saw some gorgeous, but completely impractical rings that are nice to look at – but you wouldn’t be able to wear them.

I know this is probably not the easiest or most practical ring to wear but I thought it was so cute that I need to show you!

Haha how sweet?

Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo

I learnt two things on Saturday at the beautiful polo fields of Val de Vie.. 1. I need to take more photos of people and their beautiful jewellery at an event (I get sooo intimidated to walk up to people and ask for a shot of their earrings!) and 2. that a girl can never have enough Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream and Veuve Clicquot Champagne.

Yes, it was a tough day..

Yes, it was a tough day..

I was very excited for the event (so much so that I had planned by outfit a few days in advance. Ok fine, when i say days I mean weeks.) I was lucky enough to have won a blowdry and mani from Marios Hair Company so looked and felt very glam! I was wearing a royal blue dress so paired it with my Metallic Mermaid gold statement butterfly necklace..

Necklace is from Metallic Mermaid, Ring and Earrings are stolen from my sister so not quite sure where they are from and the bracelet is Louis Vuitton.

I know I look slightly naked in this pic but my dress was a one shoulder.. just FYI.

I know I look slightly naked in this pic but my dress was a one shoulder.. just FYI. Also, the big smile is because the Elizabeth Arden girls had just come round with enough 8 hour to last me through winter. WIN!

There was loads of beautiful jewellery on display, much of which were statement necklaces and big earrings. Karisa, from My love Affair with Cape Town and Ritza from Luxo Blog were both wearing gorgeous earrings.

Karisa's boyfriend bought these for her. This guy has style!

Isn't she beautiful? Turns out Mario did her hair too - snap! (however, she has way more hair than I do..)

Necklaces also seemed to steal the show, as can be seen below.

This was a seriaaaas statement piece!

The gorgeous Leigh from Lipgloss is My Life also wore gold jewellery and had the most beautiful ring on.. Because it was so hot, the servers were walking around with Hagen Daaz ice cream in cute paper cones that matched Leigh’s bright pink nails..

How much do you love the watch too?

But sometimes, simple is the way to go. Often outfits can be made by jewellery and then there are other times when all the jewellery needs to do is enhance the dress. Chelle, the brains behind DearDeer, who was wearing an amazing leopard print frock, got this just right!

Love that Cehelle is rocking the gold ring finger nail polish!

I managed to watch a bit of the game, went onto the field for the traditional ‘stomping’ of the field (because the field gets pretty churned with the horses hooves, the crowd is encouraged to go and ‘stomp’ the earth back into place) and stroked a horse who had shinier hair than I could ever hope for! All in all – a good day at the polo!

Baa Baa Handmade Accessories

I have wanted to blog about this jewellery for a while now.. I just love these quirky pieces and the fact that although seemingly relatively simple to make, there is not a chance that I could ever make something look this good.

Megan says that she started the label when she went to visit a friend in Durban and was looking for a really nice hairclip. She couldn’t find a nice one so set out to make one herself. When wearing it, she received so many compliments, she thought she would make a few and see how they sold. And here we are!

Baa Baa designs are all unique creations with character and individual style.  The collection includes clip on earrings, studded earrings, rings, bracelets, scarves, chains, headbands and broaches. The accessories are hand-made in a wide variety of fine materials such as silver, brass, glass, bows, buttons, ribbon, leather, seeds, and other found objects.

The first time I saw the Baa Baa stand, it reminded my of a treasure chest..

She only sells as markets in Cape Town and Durban so you will have to follow her Facebook page to find out where she is next. I really like her jewellery as it’s really different and yet completely wearable. This is the type of jewellery that you are BOUND to get comments when you wearing it.

Her necklaces are lovely, if not a little fussy for me. I prefer simple chains and I found some stunning ones on her page;

If you are in Durban, you are able to buy the range at Azure Collection. Otherwise drop her a mail on megankim.amon@gmail.com.

P.S. I’m very excited as I’m going to the Veuve Cliquot Polo at Val de Vie on Saturday! I am taking along my camera and will snap away at what jewellery the ladies are wearing so pop in on Monday for a look! Happy Friday!

The Bling at the Baftas

Girls, I know I am a little late with this post. I apologise but now that you have seen all the outfits, we can now focus on the jewellery yes? Love the way I spun that..

So first up we have the beautiful Thandie Newton.

Annabelle Wallis (ok I admit, I had NO idea who she was so I had to google) from The Tudors showed everyone a thing or two by stacking up her gold bracelets.

See? Stacking is IN girls..

and then Laura Whitmore (no clue who she is either but I know she has incredible style) decided to bang together two trends and stack cuffs. And got it right in my opinion!

Marion Cotillard wore a diamond necklace that I thought was very meh to be honest. Loved the lipstick, but not the jewels.

Sarah Silverman was nice in green emerald earrings. Just nice though. Don’t know if it’s the photo but they look a little bit plastic-y. Just me?

Love the length of the earrings though (Getty)

I think Amy Adams stole my heart with these earrings.

How amazing are these. They would be quite costume jewellery-ish if it wasn’t for the fact that THEY WERE REAL! By Faberge, the centre stones totalled 56.37 carats! (Getty)

Another one who I wanted to snatch the earrings off of was Jennifer Lawrence. Although her hair looked as if she had just jumped out of the shower, the earrings dazzled.

um, yes please!

um, yes please!

Good old SJP, Miss Sex and The City herself really went to town.

The bracelets are by Fenton. Loving that she wore one on either wrist though, quite different. I would have stacked them up. (Getty)

So that’s that then. All the bling from the Bafta’s. Who wore their jewellery the best? If you HAD to choose one option from the above, which piece would you choose? Let me know!

Paper Planes

I was watching the Twitter feed float by the other day when I stumbled across a gem of a Youtube video (I think it may have been Briony who tweeted about it – shot B!). It’s a short film, made by Disney that introduces a groundbreaking technique which seamlessly merges computer-generated and hand-drawn animation techniques. I must be honest, that didn’t mean much to me but when you watch it you will see that the gobbledegook in the previous sentence just means that it’s amazing. It’s nominated for an Oscar and the frustrating thing is that it seems to have been taken off Youtube and only the trailer remains..

Cute hey? I’m assuming because the Oscars are soon they have removed it? Ek weet nie.

But what has this got to do with jewellery I hear you asking? Well, who knew paper planes could be an inspiration for jewellery? A very talented jewellery designer, Megan Fogarty from Oh Dear Megan must have thought so when she launched her new paper plane inspired jewellery. I tried to get more information from Megan herself but alas. However, it does not stop us from looking at the beautiful pieces she has come up with!

How gorgeous is this paper plane ring?

The jewellery and the design just works. Beautiful lines and well-crafted pieces make this collection one to look out for! As far as I can see, Oh Dear Megan will be at Design Indaba but best you follow her @ohdearmegan (all the piccies were taken off Twitter so follow her for more sneak peeks) or find her on Facebook or her website http://www.ohdearmegan.com for more details on the prices and where you can buy these gorgeous pieces.

Flotique Jewellery

Hands up if you know and love Florence and the Machines? Hands up if you love her style? Now that both hands are up you are allowed a sneaky little fist pump as I have good news – she has come out with her own range of jewellery! (If no hands were raised in this exercise go onto Youtube and search “Dog days are over”. If you STILL are clueless, I give up.)

How beautiful is she? I specifically chose this image jsut to prove how good her choice in jewellery is.. This isn't er own range though (source)

Turns out she has her own webstore where the bands sells albums and band merchandise. She was inspired by the album Ceremonials and decided to create a seven piece collection called Flotique (I know, the name needs a little work). The designs are silver and gold plated and the designs are inspired by the typography on the albums front cover.

She also designed a bracelet that I would give anything to get my hands on this baby

And finally, the best for last, the rings (of course, not because I’m ring verskrik or anything) because it also has a really nice story behind it. The ring was designed around her birdcage tattoo on her finger.

The range is selling for between 20-50 pounds (R275 – R690. It sucks having to convert). The ring is the cheapest while that bracelet that I covet is the most expensive (of course).

While you were reading this post you had “Dog days are over” in your head the whole time didn’t you? Well, even if you didn’t, you do now. It’s a pleasure 😉

My Stall

If you are like me, you love scrounging around at Saturday morning markets finding treasures and one-of-a-kind pieces. But sometimes (or often) Saturday mornings are meant for recovery and no matter how much you want to go to a market, you can’t face the thought of walking to the kitchen to make coffee, let alone traipsing through a market.

This is where My Stall comes in. In their words, “My Stall is your website to buy and sell creations from South Africa’s finest individuals and business start ups”. SUCH a clever idea! Now all the stallholders at markets and small start ups can put their wares online and we can see and buy their products from the comfort of our own home!

There are many different categories but of course the one I am going to chat about is the jewellery. Because it’s quite new, there isn’t a huge selection but watch this site get more and more popular..

Sign up at http://www.mystall.co.za (so that you can start shopping) and when you register you get a free R50 discount voucher which lasts for 60 days. Just remember though, that you do have to pay for delivery and each delivery price is different as each designer is responsible for their own delivery, so make sure you know the full amount. But because the products are so reasonably priced anyway, delivery charges don’t make a huge difference and it is dam convenient for it to arrive at your doorstep!

Girls, this site is beautiful and reminds me of Pinterest as there are all sorts of categories like Vintage, Home & Living, Art even Weddingsnbut the best part is that all the products are local and can be bought! So no lusting after something that can only be bought overseas!

I heart Valentine’s Day

No.. actually I don’t. I think it’s kitch and a money making scheme. But because the content of this post is going to be hearts, the heading just fitted. Call it false advertising if you will.

But not everything has to be fluffy teddy bears (gross) and plastic roses (double gross). There are some beautiful pieces of jewellery that don’t have to be vomit-inducing when given ‘on the day of love’ *cue a dry heave*.

I can't find the source which is annoying but how cute is this 'key ring'.. haha! I love puns.

Chinese Year of the Snake

So tomorrow marks the Chinese New Year, the year of the snake. if you were born between 18 Feb 1977 and 06 Feb 1978 or 06 Feb 1989 and 26 January 1990 then this is your Chinese Zodiac. Now I must be honest, I don’t really read into zodiacs and stars much but if you do then apparently a person born under the sign of the snake often have a good temper and a skill at communicating but say little. They are usually financially secure and do not have to worry about money (This is why I know I was DEFINITELY not born under the sign of the snake!) Although they look calm on the surface, they are intense and passionate. They have a rich source of inspiration and understand themselves well. Women under the sign of the snake do well in housework but are irritable (Wahaha really? I think this applies to most women really – I mean, who does well at housework and actually ENJOYS it?!?)

But what does it have to do with you and I who are not Chinese I hear you ask? Well, even the snake is making it’s appearance in jewellery. Some are a little slithery for my liking but others are not too bad.

Love it but all together it looks a little bit freaky!

I could definitely do the above bracelets. They are pretty and I quite like the coral and gold together.

Slithery and freaky or on trend and wearable? Let me know what you think..
