Bow Peep

A Cape Town jewellery label I have come to love and wear is Bow Peep. I first spotted Leila’s jewellery at a market and instantly fell in love with her pieces. But it was the end of the month so I had to leave sad an empty handed. I then signed up to her newsletter so that I could buy a few things at the next market she was at but, unbeknown to me, she had a competition for people who had signed up to her newsletter and I won! Now, I never win anything so this was a really big deal for me. Also, I hadn’t started the blog yet so I really won legitimately. Not because I would feature her stuff, but just because I like her work.

How cute is this little camera pendant on a silver chain?

And like her work I do indeed! Her label has just turned two, a very big deal for a jewellery label in South Africa and I managed to get her to answer a few of my questions..

How did you become a jewellery designer?

I have been making accessories for years, I used to things for myself or for friends. I started thinking about selling my accessories towards the end of 2010 and then started Bow Peep in March 2011. Last year I started working with silver.

An example of her cute silver button necklaces.

All Bow Peep accessories use an element of fabric and Leila is able to get her inspiration from the colours and patterns of the fabric.

How cute are these earrings? And the fabric is so different making for a set of very unique earrings.

What is your favourite piece of jewellery that you have made?

I worked for a long time to design my button necklaces, it took ages to make a prototype, have it cast and manufactured but I’m really happy with the results.

A few of her pendent necklaces.

Leila’s favourite pieces!

Do you ever have days when you are completely uninspired?

Yes, all the time. I try and use that time to work on marketing Bow Peep or doing admin.

She even has the most wonderful bowtie range - for girls and guys.

Leila knows her customers well and that they are on the look out for pretty things. She is always on the look out for floral print fabrics but keeps in mind that she also has customers who like simpler more geometric patterned fabric.

Floral earrings. She's right you know, her customers (read: me) do like these pretty things.

Heart fabric earrings. She’s right, her customer do like these pretty things and she is on point with the fabrics she chooses.

The eclectic, colourful and simply designed jewellery is sure to get noticed and can be bought from the Bow Peep online store (here), Hello Pretty (here) or various retailers. Like her on Facebook here.

How gorgeous are her tote bags too? I won one of these and wear it everywhere.

psst.. Bow Peep is currently having a birthday sale until the 7 April where if you order anything from the online store or the Bow Peep store on Hello Pretty, you will receive a free gift with your purchase! So go, go, go!

And of course, I had to throw a ring in. Just because this is the one that I won and also because I have a slight ring obsession.

Make a Statement

If you thought that statement jewellery has had it’s day, think again. Trends emerging from the Fashion Weeks that have taken place recently (New York, London, Paris) are showing that showpiece jewellery is still a big trend for Spring/Summer 2013. Here in SA, we are two seasons behind the rest of the world (just because we are in the Southern Hemisphere) which means that these trends are still to hit us. However, the nice thing with jewellery is that, unlike clothes which we need to wat to come into the shops, we can adapt and make the jewellery currently in stores work for us. And if walking around the SA shops lately is anything to go by, pick up some awesome trendy pieces now to wear well into next year.

Alexander McQueen

Hows this choker by Alexander McQueen? I know you looked at the hat first.. hard not to really. But that choker! I want. [Image: GoRunway]

Balmain

These earrings from Balmain are not my favourite but more to illustrate that big is in. [Image: GoRunway]

Celine

Erm.. These cuffs from Celine are not the best either. But hey, it is the runway and not everything is meant to be taken literally. Right?! [Image: GoRunway]

Chanel

Of course, this would be Chanel. Classic and timeless pearls. But in abundance! [Image: GoRunway]

Diane von Furstenburg

Diane von Furstenburg takes ‘going big’ to the next level. [Image: GoRunway]

Dolce and Gabbana 2

Love the ‘headband and big earring’ look from Dolce and Gabbana. Could easily look a little gypsy-ish but this looks fun. Maybe if we all had cheekbones like that we could pull this off.. [Image: GoRunway]

Etro

Love this gemstone cuff by Etro. [Image: GoRunway]

Givenchy

Givenchy went very minimalist with their statement jewellery. Sleek yet bold. [Image: GoRunway]

Gucci

And this has to be my favourite. Gucci went floral statement necklaces with simple garments. I love this as it’s not too over the top that it’s not wearable. [Image: GoRunway]

Hermes

And this cuff/glove by Hermes is a statement piece if I ever saw one. Not too over the top but eye catching and different. [Image: GoRunway]

This is not my first post about statement jewellery (view the other post here) nor will it be my last! So my advice is, invest in some statement jewellery girls – the bigger, the better!

Accessorize

So yesterday I received a mayday from a colleague who was stuck at the airport and needed a lift. Being in that situation myself once before, I hopped in my car and trundled off the airport. (Ok, let’s be honest here, I cajoled boyfriend to drive us.) While waiting for my colleague to arrive, I browsed through the Accessorize store and found a few treasures I thought I must share with you girls.

Bow in a heart studs. I would have bought these if it wasn’t for the end of the month brokeness.

This was my favourite (and most expensive – go figure). A gold ‘belt’ bracelet for R249.

A gorgeous cat ring with green eyes. A bit bulky but so very lovely.

Girls, I tried to get prices however I took the photos on bf’s phone (he as an iPhone. My crapberry would NOT have taken such nice photos) and then he didn’t email me the prices. But no biggie, they are all so beautiful anyway so let’s say that all the pieces are priceless..! Get it?? Ok sorry..

The Digital Accessory Showcase

Yes. This is as amazing as it sounds. I couldn’t really contain my excitement when I read about and if you are a jewllery nut like I am, you are going to love what I have to tell you. So digitalfashionshows.com is a website that acts as a showcase for customers the same way fashion runway shows do. You can view the collections online, see the designer bio, view the lookbooks etc.

BUT, from the 16th March, for the first time – a collection of the world’s jewellery designers will get to show their latest offering online! In other words instead of looking at a designer’s collection of clothes, you are getting to see a designers collection of jewellery! This is amazing becasue just like clothing designers, jewellery designers design for seasons too. But because the models are strutting amazing garments on the runway, the jewellery sometimes gets lost.

Not here. Here you can view designers by name and season. It is easier to pick up trends, see what jewellery designers are coming up with.. the list just goes on and on! Swarovski has helped put the whole thing together, and thus their newest range is featured. All the jewels are exquisite as well as extremely expensive. So this site is perfect for looking, but not actually buying.

Irene Neuwirth Jewellery is one of the designers featured and her bio explains that she ‘has emerged as a leading, independent jewelry brand, recognized by its uniquely modern and sophisticated designs. The jewelry has generated tremendous editorial attention and is worn by some of the most beautiful women in the world.’ (Awesome, beautiful women who can afford it obviously) ‘Today the collection is modern and timeless, with an element of edge and surprise.’

Who says earring have to be exactly the same? I love these earring below because the stones were not cut to fit the earring, but rather the other way around.

And this ring.. just takes my breath away!

Maria Francesa Pepe Jewellery is a breath of fresh air. While most of the jewellery is pretty and chock a block with stones, this collection is inspired by British avant-garde. ‘The contrast of bold, sharp and geometric designs, combined with a touch of romanticism is what differentiates the MFP collections and makes it the brand of choice of the trendsetters.’

As the showcase is presented by Swarovski, it hosts the brands recent range. I must be honest, I’m not a great fan of Swarovski, purely becuase I jsut find it a little fussy for my liking. However I did spot some gems (pardon the pun).

These are all the Autumn/Winter 2013-14  ranges. Although it’s a small collection of jewellery for now, hopefully this takes off and becomes your one stop (window) shop for all things beautiful! To log on and see your yourself, visit the site here.

Emma Anne Jewellery

Another Cape Town jewellery designer has grabbed my attention with her gorgeous and intricate detailed pieces. Her flow ring was nominated for the 2010 Design Indaba ‘Most Beautiful Object in South Africa”. She was one of 12 finalists – so serious bragging rights here people!

How gorgeous is this? Although she didn't win, I think this is justly deserving of being a finalist.

She has very different pieces and you can really see her creativity and love for what she does in her work.

This is why I’m broke..

Apart from the above being my monthly motto, there is also an amazing website called thisiswhyimbroke.com. Seriously. It is the craziest, quirkiest website as pointed out to me by my bestie Carey. She was scouring the web and stumbled across this site and because it has jewellery, she thought it may be interesting to feature on my blog. Well she was right!

A peanut butter and jam necklace. Apart from being so cute, it is a twist on a friendship neckalce! How much do you hate those half hearts friendship necklaces? I know. Horrid. And these are just too cute! For $17.15

Seriously, if you find yourself with some time to kill, venture to this site. It’s awesome and has some great presents for the men (geeks) in your life. Go and find the bacon plasters. They are hilarious!

Love Lovisa

If there is one brand that I quite love, it’s Lovisa. They don’t have a South African site up and running (just an Aussie one which is strange) but I believe they have a store in Canal Walk, Blue Route and Tygervalley for those in Cape Town, if you in Jozi you can find them at Cresta, Clearwater, Eastgate and Nicolway Bryanston. If you are from Durbs, go to Gateway and La Lucia Mall to spoil yourself. These are my Lovisa lust haves..

Keep Calm..

Girls, I need to apologise for a lack of post today. Currently I am running around like a mad thing for work, although that is no excuse. Whether you are off to RAMfest today, preparing to cycle the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour or just planning a weekend of fun, remember..

My motto for this coming weekend..

Caratstones.com

Online shopping seems to be the way to go. I mean, why put yourself through the drama of getting up on a Saturday morning, circling the carpark, fighting crowds and crying babies and ya, you’re agreeing with me now aren’t you? I stumbled across this very cool if not hazardous site. I say hazardous because everything is so beautiful that you just want to buy it all. It’s called CaratStones.com. Prices are a little steep but there is a mixture if international and local labels on the site.

CaratStones.com is created by former French marketing manager, Eugenie Vellieux, who worked several years in the jewellery industry in Europe, in France and Italy. Eugenie furthered her knowledge in South Africa and decided to start up the website that not only sells the collections of well-known and new South African designers buy intends on featuring consistently successful Euopean brands that are not yet accessible to the South African market.

Teardrop with citrine R450. Queen Magpie (CT)

These earring are from Queen Magpie in Cape Town. Teardrop with citrine they are R450.

Gold Jamie Bracelet R505 Joya (Cape Town)

This ‘Gold Jamie’ bracelet is from Joya which is from Cape Town too. Gorgeous and perfect for stacking but a little pricey at R505.

Little bow bracelet silver, R580,

How gorgeous is this little bow? From a brand called Very Sisters from Paris, it’s R580 for this unique piece.

R465, coral bracelets, Paris

These are by far my favourite on the whole site! Each bracelet is sold separately though for R465 each (ouch!) but look at how lovely?? The designer is from Paris.

Sautoir Eugenie rhodonite R550 Dear Charlotte (French)

This necklace, Sautoir Eugenie Rhodonite, immediately caught my eye when browsing on the site. It is R550 and from Dear Charlotte, a French designer.

SUR LES TOITS DE PARIS, R580, coral pink knotted chain bracelet with coral bead

This coral pink knotted chain bracelet with coral bead is from Paris and is sold for R580.

And there you have it! You see what I mean about them prices being a little steep? But the jewellery is lovely and super convenient that you can get national and international designer jewellery delivered right to your door! For more info or to buy some of these pieces, visit the site here.

Dolce and Gabbana at Milan Fashion Week

So there are so many Fashion Weeks going on at the moment I can barely keep up! One of the shows that is making so much noise is the Dolce and Gabbana Autumn/Winter Collection. And I can see why! With a very cathederal-like influence, all the jewels (including crucifixes, rosaries and crowns) were very bold and created a huge statement! Coloured gemstones seem to be the ‘it’ stone in the coming winter season, the more the better!

A crown fit for a princess? More like a warrior princess! There was nothing whimsical about this collection, with the models looking particularly fierce!

This makes me think of Jozi ‘okes’ who wear crucifixes when they go out. It looks beautiful on the model but I am not exactly about to rush out and buy one.
