The Jewellery Show 2013

For those of you who follow me on Twitter and Instagram you will know that I attended The Jewellery Show at Somerset House in London this week. It was a trade show so there were many buyers milling about (I could only wish to buy some of the gorgeous items on display!) as well as people just fanatical about jewellery (like yours truly).

I was so stupidly excited of my name tag that I continued to wear long after the show. Nerd I know.

I was so stupidly excited of my name tag that I continued to wear it long after the show. So mature.

One of the big attractions was the catwalk show where models were wearing jewellery that highlighted the current trends and designers making a splash. Now you have to excuse the quality of these images. I tried to get the official images with no success and because we were told no camera’s were allowed, all I had was an iPhone. But you’ll get the idea.

Pearls:

Pearls are a must for Spring/Summer but are also making an appearance on Fall 2013 runways. Not just one string mind you, layer layer layer or get the biggest ‘pearls’ you can find to make an impact!

IMG_0341

Jewellery by The Real Pearl Co. Not only draped around the neck but cuffs, rings and earrings too. See how big the pearls in the earrings are? If you find a necklace with oversized pearls like that you’ll be bang on trend.

Jewellery from La Perle Blanche

Jewellery from La Perle Blanche, another example of many strands of pearls but worn pendant style.

Pendants:

I love pendant necklaces because it reminds me of my childhood wearing my dolphin pendant necklace! Obviously there were no dolphins to be seen on the runway but pendants are coming back in a big way. Longer length seems to be more popular but wear it according to your preference.

Homepagetopimage1

Jewellery by Lucet Mundi. This photo was taken professionally (as you can see) and the layering trend also manages to sneak in here. Different lengths make for an unusual take on the ‘statement necklace’ trend.

IMG_0353

I was so in love with this dress that I didn’t even take note of who the designer was but my guess would be Quoins. Again, the more pendants, the merrier.

Cuffs:

Girls, cuffs have not gone out of trend and look set to hang around for a while..

IMG_0344

Jewellery by Jessica Flinn. Not content with just one cuff, this model is wearing three!

Statement Pieces:

The bigger the better. As seen above and below, if it’s the same design and colours, go overboard! If it’s different designers, I might recommend just going with one big piece so that it doesn’t look like you’re trying too hard.

IMG_0340

Making a statement is not complete without a cuff. Just FYI. Also, I have no idea who the designer is for this piece, apologies!

Jewellery by Lucy Q Designs. Gorgeous silver statement necklace.

So there you have it! I was able to interview the most awesome designers and saw some gorgeous designs so be sure to keep an eye on my blog as I will be putting them up over the course of the next few weeks. Have a great weekend everyone!

Gold is a girl’s new best friend according to Elie Saab

Gold is here to stay. And not in a subtle way either. I must be honest I am not a big fan of wearing too much gold as we had a neighbour when I was small who used to drip with gold jewellery and I always thought it was slightly kitch. But the more jewellery I am loving and wanting to buy, gold is definitely creeping in there..

Elie Saab’s pre-fall collection included major gold jewellery so your cuffs and statement necklaces are still going to be around for a while!

This may be a little hectic to wear for a drink at the pub..

I quite love this. I don’t think I will like the price tag however.

Love this cuff that the model is wearing! Now this is something I would lvoe to have around my wrist!

Bracelets with meaning..

And by meaning I mean with actual words. Pepping you up during the day. Usually, I would hate something like this, deeming it a little too kitch. However, when my colleague gave me a farewell present of a gold bracelet with the words, “The best is yet to come” I was really touched and I now always wear it when I have an interview. I can hear her saying it to me when I look at it. Which may seem daft, but on days where you are sure your next move is to the London sidewalk with a cardboard box, a blanket and a sign saying, “Will clean jewellery for food”, it’s like a mini pep talk that goes on between my wrist and I.

I couldn’t find my one but is seems that there are many available. How lovely and perfect for stacking! R130.

Found at Sass Diva there are plenty with many different messages on them. They are not too “in your face” and perfect for giving to a girlfriend for a birthday or as a surprise gift.

561925_472404539466525_802279010_n

This one is also cute with the words, Hope, Love, Dream, Laugh, Believe on it.

76282_472404716133174_716847815_n

And they are also available in silver. Nice.

So if you are looking for a great present, visit Sass Diva here or follow them on Facebook here (all pictures are from here), Twitter @SassDivaSA and Pinterest here. Their social media is amazing and following them ensures that you are not only going to get updates about their latest jewellery and sales, but also cute and motivational posts. I’m not gushing, I just find that following a page on Facebook invariably leads to frustration when they post about the same thing all the time and include irrelevant posts. Anyway, rant over. You may go and follow now 🙂

Emirates High Street

So as you all know, I am now in London Town! It took 24 hours of travelling, crying babies and free breakfasts of fish (don’t ask) but here I am! I flew on Emirates Airlines and, being the traveller virgin I am, I didn’t realise that they would come around with trolley of lovely goods that are all duty free! Because I am currently (f)unemployed in a city that is R14 to a pound I didn’t spend anything but it didn’t stop me from having a good look..

A beautiful 3 ringed gold-plated necklace with embedded crystals 65dol

I quite liked this gold-plated necklace with embedded crystals. However for 65 dollars (the prices were all in dollars) it was just nice to look at.

Aigner Leather Bracelet Set 66dollars

Loved these and they come as a pair! They are Aigner Leather Bracelets and cost 66 dollars for the set.

Swarovski Bella Pierced Earrings 71dol

These babies are Swarovski and for 71 dollars could have been mine. But alas, I didn’t have 71 dollars.

Swarovski Slake Bracelet 67dol

A favourite of mine was this Swarovski Slake Bracelet. I love that the leather and the subtle jewels work so well together.

Tateossian Ladies Luce Bracelet 69dol

Not crazy about this bracelet but I liked the colours.. It is a Tateossian Luce Bracelet and is 69 dollars.

Victoria Lawson Golden Rays Necklace and Bracelet Set 99dol

I don’t know if I would wear the necklace but the bracelet is darn nice! It’s a Victoria Lawson Golden Rays Necklace and Bracelet Set for 99 dollars.

So now you know that if you travelling on Emirates and have money to blow, this is the best way to do it! Then you can hop off the plane looking all glam.

Coachella 2013 Jewellery

So I’m sure many of you are aware that Coachella took place this past weekend and all the celebs and lucky buggers who got to go were out in full fashion force. This is not just a music festival y’all, but a full on fashion parade with lots of side eyes as to who wore what. I was more interested to see the jewellery side of it and whether people would totally glam it up or keep it relaxed and casual.

Alessandra Ambrosio

This is Alessandra Ambrosio’s first day outfit. Sheesh, this girl has legs huh?

CU2

Love that she played up the Coachella armband and used it as one of her stacking bracelets. Love this festival style.

Coachella-Fashion-2013-Celebrity-Pictures

Kate Bosworth looked cute in an all white ensemble.

CU1

But it was her leaf bracelet that I loved!
Katy Perry

Katy Perry looked really cute wearing an on-trend crucifix and cuff.

CU4

The necklace reminds me of the Dolce and Gabbanna runway show (here).

Sophia Bush

Sophia Bush made the statement necklace work for her, taking a lovely (if not ordinary) dress and dressing it up.

CU3

This bib necklace is very on trend and looks amazing on her!

All above images can be found here. But celebs weren’t the only ones rocking out with their fest style;

If you ever needed evidence that stacking is trend, here you go..

Some people went all out. I don’t know if I could have survived a festival with this on to be honest.

slide_291827_2333337_free

Statement necklaces were in abundance.. As was plenty of skin.

How much do you love this silver bib necklace?

Coachella, I think we may have to meet one day. One day soon.

Dear Rae Jewellery

It’s one of my favourite things to be tipped off about an awesome jewellery designer – only to realise that she comes from good old Cape Town! I have liked very similar jewellery on Pinterest so imagine my excitement to find out that I can purchase my own gorgeous pieces right down the road.

Yes, i know. Bask in the prettiness.

Yes, i know. Bask in the prettiness.

Dear Rae Jewellery was started in 2012 by Karin Rae Matthee, who has a BA Fine Art from Stellenbosch University (my Alma Mater too!). She says on her website that,

In 2008 she completed a semester at the Pforzheim Hochschule in Germany. This exchange was a very significant experience in Karin’s studies, it refined her skills and inspired her to start Dear Rae.

How much do you love the rings?

How much do you love the rings?

Well I’m pretty glad that she did start this gorgeous brand as I could happily spend next months entire salary on her pieces! The jewellery is made up of natural lines and simplistic forms and are available in gold, silver, brass and copper. These precious pieces are designed to be worn everyday and celebrate the beauty and ease of simplicity and translate into functional jewellery.

She has the most interesting pendant necklaces;

necklace 1

All pendants come with a sterling silver chain and you can order 40cm, 45cm, 50cm, 55cm or 60cm chain length.

The bracelets are also beautiful and are perfect for the stacking trend at the moment!

A bangle that will last you for a very long time..

3

Although these are all in brass, they can be made in silver to order.

2

A few of these bangles together my wrist would just be so at home.

Now you all know I’m a sucker for rings.. How cute are these babies below?

So you can buy one in every colour, to match every outfit.

How lovely is the little cut out heart?

And then, for some added pizzaz, she also throws in a few gemstones to keep things beautiful;

The uniqueness of this ring just makes me want to get my own!

If you have now fallen as head over heels for Dear Rae Jewellery as I now have, you can visit their website here, like their Facebook page here and follow her on Twitter @Dearrae. My favourite part of the whole website is the cleaning instructions – “the best way to keep your jewellery clean is to wear it”. Now with a motto like that, you know these pieces are made to last!

Thanks @Claire_Hills for directing me to this awesome find!

Accessorize

So yesterday I received a mayday from a colleague who was stuck at the airport and needed a lift. Being in that situation myself once before, I hopped in my car and trundled off the airport. (Ok, let’s be honest here, I cajoled boyfriend to drive us.) While waiting for my colleague to arrive, I browsed through the Accessorize store and found a few treasures I thought I must share with you girls.

Cute little bronze heart studs.

Bow in a heart studs. I would have bought these if it wasn’t for the end of the month brokeness.

This was my favourite (and most expensive – go figure). A gold ‘belt’ bracelet for R249.

A gorgeous cat ring with green eyes. A bit bulky but so very lovely.

Girls, I tried to get prices however I took the photos on bf’s phone (he as an iPhone. My crapberry would NOT have taken such nice photos) and then he didn’t email me the prices. But no biggie, they are all so beautiful anyway so let’s say that all the pieces are priceless..! Get it?? Ok sorry..

Love Lovisa

If there is one brand that I quite love, it’s Lovisa. They don’t have a South African site up and running (just an Aussie one which is strange) but I believe they have a store in Canal Walk, Blue Route and Tygervalley for those in Cape Town, if you in Jozi you can find them at Cresta, Clearwater, Eastgate and Nicolway Bryanston. If you are from Durbs, go to Gateway and La Lucia Mall to spoil yourself. These are my Lovisa lust haves..

The Oscars 2013 Jewellery

By now you have seen the dresses, seen the speeches and seen Jennifer Lawrence’s fall on her way to accept her award.. (Awkies – but so well handled!). Now is the time to have a look at the jewellery and wow – there were some amazing pieces! Not surprisingly, diamonds seemed to be the rock of choice and cuffs were big this year. Small drop earrings or studs with big necklaces or statement earrings seemed to be the next bet but cuffs definitely ruled this Oscars.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Jennifer Aniston work diamond bracelets and a ring that I would die for!

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Reese Witherspoon also whipped out the diamond cuff..

Jennifer Garner was bang on trend.

Amy Adams' diamond cuff was by Moa.

US-OSCARS-ARRIVALS

Renee Zellwegger piled the cuffs on in a gorgeous maroon.

And then the rings. Now you all know I have a soft spot for rings, but these were amazing.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Jennifer Hudson wore a ring with a circular design, very original. Called a Halo Ring, it was by Sutra. I’ll take two thanks,

21st Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation's Oscar Viewing Party - Arrivals

Ok now normally I am not a matchy matchy type. But the ring just works with these amazing earrings. It is from the Murder She Wrote collection by Stephen Webster (how cool is that collections name?)

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

And Zoe Saldana? She wins the ring off hands down! I LOVE the fact that she is wearing more than one ring on one hand and that ring sitting above her knuckle proves that she is a rockstar. A jewellery rockstar. Top marks.

And the snake ring is also a trend at the mo (see my post about it here).

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Now I must be honest, I have no idea who Samantha Barks is but this necklace was too lovely to leave out. Attention grabbing to the max.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Ditto the above with this chicky boo who arrived with Steven Spielberg. Kate Capshaw stole the show with her diamond collar, I even spotted it when the camera zoomed out during the show. Nice.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

If you look carefully at Amanda Seyfried’s ears, you’ll see that these are actually cute little ear cuffs.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

I know Jane Fonda looks deep in thought, don’t let that fool you – it’s all the botox. She rocked (excuse the pun) 8ct yellow diamond chandelier earrings set in 18ct yellow gold by Chopard.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Catherine Zeta Jones took my breath away. Not because she barely looks her age, but because of those earrings by Lorraine Schwartz. I want.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Jessica Chastain always brings an elemant of old Hollywood glamour in my opinion and her earrings did her justice.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Nicole Kidman wore black and gold earrings from Fred Leighton. Not too sure about these, I must be honest.

And that’s that folks! There were many other baubles on display but I chose my favourite to show you. Think I missed any out? Let me know!

The Bling at the Baftas

Girls, I know I am a little late with this post. I apologise but now that you have seen all the outfits, we can now focus on the jewellery yes? Love the way I spun that..

So first up we have the beautiful Thandie Newton.

How are those earrings?? It's gold chain with a diamond sphere pearl suspended inside. I'll take two thanks.. (Getty)

Annabelle Wallis (ok I admit, I had NO idea who she was so I had to google) from The Tudors showed everyone a thing or two by stacking up her gold bracelets.

See? Stacking is IN girls..

See? Stacking is IN girls..

and then Laura Whitmore (no clue who she is either but I know she has incredible style) decided to bang together two trends and stack cuffs. And got it right in my opinion!

Golden cuffs and a turquoise ring with a jumpsuit that I would die to own, but don’t have anywhere fancy to wear it. (Getty)

Marion Cotillard wore a diamond necklace that I thought was very meh to be honest. Loved the lipstick, but not the jewels.

See what I mean about the meh-ness?

Sarah Silverman was nice in green emerald earrings. Just nice though. Don’t know if it’s the photo but they look a little bit plastic-y. Just me?

(Getty)

Love the length of the earrings though (Getty)

I think Amy Adams stole my heart with these earrings.

EE British Academy Film Awards - Red Carpet Arrivals

How amazing are these. They would be quite costume jewellery-ish if it wasn’t for the fact that THEY WERE REAL! By Faberge, the centre stones totalled 56.37 carats! (Getty)

For once, I'm not quite sure if I'm liking this ring vibe.. (Getty)

Another one who I wanted to snatch the earrings off of was Jennifer Lawrence. Although her hair looked as if she had just jumped out of the shower, the earrings dazzled.

um, yes please!

um, yes please!

Good old SJP, Miss Sex and The City herself really went to town.

The bracelets are by Fenton. Loving that she wore one on either wrist though, quite different. I would have stacked them up. (Getty)

So that’s that then. All the bling from the Bafta’s. Who wore their jewellery the best? If you HAD to choose one option from the above, which piece would you choose? Let me know!
